To get all the information, you may have to wait for the entire page to
load.
This site is here to
encourage participation. While this has primarily been a California Track and
Field listing service, the goal is to create a universal listing of
Open/All-Comer events. We have listings from a majority of states now and are
continuing to research. If you are a meet director, please check your listing
and also look at what other places are doing. It is encouraging to see some of
the low tech innovation employed at some of these meets to create interest.
For now, California listings will be first (yellow), followed by the other
states (listed by state, then city--cyan) and then international listings
(magenta). As we get more responses from outside of California, we may ammend
that system. We have used standard 2 letter Postal designations. To find your
state, do a character search on those letters. We recommend you use "Case
Sensitive."
Definitions: What is an All-Comer Meet? Pretty much like it sounds,
anybody who shows up can participate. We assume these to be complete track
meets, so you have the full selection of Track and Field events to choose from.
Some events like Javelin, Hammer, Long Hurdles or Steeplechase are rare so if
we know they will be included, we will notate. Pole Vault is considered a
liability in some places and they do not have it (other meets specialize in it
or hold it exclusively). If walks are held within the meet, I will make a note
of it. If they don't offer all events, only the events held or not held
(whichever is shortest) will be mentioned. At most meets, you will be matched
in age and/or ability (from the available competitors) and you get to race.
Most meets will be able to get everybody a time but some don't have enough
volunteers. Help is usually welcome--run a stopwatch when you aren't running.
This is as close to the grass roots as our sport can get, nobody is making big
money, they are doing this because they love it. Please treat them accordingly.
There are various divisions at different meets (some even mix things up just
for the fun of it). Generally, youth or junior meets could be anywhere from age
19 down. Some go by school grade, or Junior High and High School. Open is
technically any age but usually means from High School to 30 or 40. While 40
and up is called Masters or occasionally Veterans, 30 and over qualifies for
the Sub-Masters division. 50 and up is also called Seniors by some groups--some
Seniors meets are limited ONLY to age 50 and over. USATF is the United States'
national organizing body, IAAF is the worldwide body and WMA is the master's
worldwide body. Junior Olympics is the youth national program, but meets are so
team dominated that we only list events that claim no team requrements. I go on
the logic that if you are part of a team, they will find you places to compete.
Hershey (the candy company)
sponsors a national program of youth meets for ages 9 to 14. To get to the
final met, kids need to qualify at local, state and regional free meets. All
divisions have 100, 200, Standing Long Jump, Softball Throw and 4x100 relays.
9-10 also has a 50 and 400; 11-12 also has 400 and 800; 13-14 also has 800 or
1600. There is a 2 event limit, including the relay. Contact Hershey Youth
Program: (717) 534-8087.http://www.hersheystrackandfield.com
If your state is not listed (AR, KY, ND, SD, VT, WY), let us know where
and when the events are being held. If there aren't any events in your area,
start them yourself--we'll be glad to
provide you advice on how to do so.
The events listed here are only those known to have (or are suspected of
allowing) open entries. Meets that only allow invited teams or individuals to
participate are not listed here. That means closed Junior, High School,
Collegiate or Invitational (only) events are not listed here. Some event
listings during the college season (March thru May) are not clear if they will
accept open entrants, though many do. Additionally, most collegiate points of
contact (mainly websites) cut off any means of communication directly to the
coach, leaving me no means to ASK if the meet will accept the outside entrants.
So the only ones I list are ones I find in other listings (various Open team
websites) that confirm outsiders will be welcome. Otherwise, I have to depend
on you the participant to tell me what is going on in the other 49 and a half
states I don't work regularly in. If you want to increase the chances of having
someone in the lane next to you, giving you a good race, let me know. Please be sensible--if you
are entering an obviously Collegiate dominated event, please be able to perform
to the level of the competition--holding up a meet so you can finish your event
alone will not make meet directors happy (and they could just as easily not
accept the next entrant who could belong there).
U.S.A.T.F. (United States Track and Field)
membership is required for most but not all meets, but we encourage you to
join. USATF is the national organizing body of the sport, providing the
necessary officials, rules, insurance and many other essential elements that
make our sport survive.
ALWAYS, please contact the
meet director before making a long drive--this information is not always
accurate or guaranteed. If you know of any events not listed or events listed
that are not accepting open entrants please please
send an e.mail to info@trackinfo.org. As you attend these meets, please let
the coaches and other competitors there know about this page, its the only way
to get the word out.
All of the outdoor tracks that host these meets are all-weather, except
the ones noted as **Dirt Track** locations. There are now so many all weather
tacIf you know anything wrong or not listed on this site, please send an e.mail to info@trackinfo.org
Some events are listed with no information attached. We have only heard of
the dates for these events, we don't know if they accept open competitors. Call
first. If you know more than we do, your help is welcome.
The Summer Season of All Comers Meets run from May or June through August.
By September, most of the Summer meets end. Coaches change their focus to Cross
Country, stadiums are booked for Football. Look for the Winter season of All
Comers Meets starting around December and running through early March. During
the scholastic track season, some meets continue to exist, primarily as
opportunities to gain qualifying times, but the majority of athletes are tied
to a team during this period of time--the team thus setting their schedule. I
do not bother to try to post meet information for those meets that limit their
participation to particular teams or categories. Meets that accept outside
athletes during track season are difficult to find. I particularly request such
meet information to post. Contact me.
These things change from year to year, particularly as coaches and organizers
move on. Some events are at the same location, year after year, others move as
circumstances change.
I post what I know and have confirmed, what is not listed in the actual
calendar listing has not been clarified yet. I'll list specifics above as soon
as I find out about the proper information.
