Santa Clara High School (formerly Buchser High School)
This is shooting toward the southeast. When this was a dirt track they finished
in the opposite direction. Of course that is back when this was known as Buchser
High School. At that time Santa Clara High School was located near downtown--I
believe that campus is now called Buchser Middle School where a short dirt track
exists.
While it is hard to see because the paint has worn so badly, this is an imperial
track--there is an extra start line for the 400m and 800m in lane 1. This on
a track that was built in 2000, over 20 years after the official conversion
to metric. Notice the extra paved gap between the surface and the concrete curb.
I suspect they built the curb correctly for a metric track and someone in administration
demanded an imperial track. The maintenence boxes in that lane bring on more
questions. Also notice the chunk of surface that has been torn up. There are
several of these scattered around the track. In short all of this wear is on
a relatively new track.
Because we compete in metric distances, there are extra 4x400 relay passing
zones necessary.
Here is opposite view from the 1600 start line.
In the middle of the straightaway, still more chunks missing.
The 100 start line shows wear, repairs and a chunk missing.
On the north turn, the curb ends to make room for the high jump apron. The
offset drain marking the curve (and again the utility box) either were an afterthough
or this was deliberately imperial from the drawing board. Even the flap of unused
high jump apron has a chunk missing.
At the 300h start line on the backstretch they have already made naticible
repairs and still show spike wear. Again, more chunks of track are missing in
the distance.
